Thank you for considering the Concordian International School Summer Program for your child this year. By joining our program, your child can look forward to a summer of learning and excitement!

General InformationSummer School

The CIS Summer School will be three weeks in length beginning June 14, 2010 and is designed to give students currently in K1 through Grade 10 a unique opportunity to learn or improve their Chinese, English and Math skills.

A special program for G9 and 10 will enable students to review and improve their English and Maths skills, in preparation for the Diploma Program in Grade 11.

Nursery (Chinese Program) - (Nursery sign-up sheet)

Chinese will be taught through different activities throughout the day and will follow a very similar schedule as the one you are currently used to. The nap time will be kept in the afternoon and we will include great learning activities for a summer of fun for our young learners.

The Chinese Nursery Summer School will run from 8.30am to 2.30pm (K1 through G10 will run from 8.30am to 3pm).

Summer School

K1 through Grade 4 (K1 , K2 , K3 , G1 , G2 , G3 , G4)

Our intensive program for K1 through Grade 4 will group students by grade level and provide them full day immersion in Chinese and English (Chinese 65%, English 25%, PE 10%).

Grade 5 and Grade 6 (G5 , G6)

A special program has been designed for Grade 5 and 6 which will enable students to review and improve their English and Math skills:

Grade 5 and 6 will have half day Intensive English and half day Intensive Math.

For Grade 5 and 6 students, the focus will be on reviewing grammar, essay writing, composition and work intensively on improving students’ overall language skills. Half day will be spent on Math reviewing all that has been taught in the past years and preparing them for Pre-Algebra the following year.

Grade 9 through 10 - Pre-DP Program (G9 , G10)

A special program has been designed for Grade 9-10 students which will enable them to review and improve their English written and oral skills and will be useful for students who are in need of extra help with any aspect of English, or indeed those who want to work on their world literature essay.

This is an introduction to all parts of the program; part one, world literature; part two, detailed study; part three, groups of works and part four, school’s free choice.

Each part is examined through identifying and explaining the nature of the assessment requirements, reading samples of student work and becoming familiar with the language of IB assessment criteria. Students entering IB will have the opportunity to complete a pre-reading and research of the cultural background of their world literature texts. Students currently in the IB program will have the opportunity to work on their world literature essay (20% of their final grade)In addition, there will be extensive work on the unseen commentary.

Summer School

Methods of approaching this part of the examination will be explicitly taught, with samples of student commentaries graded and discussed. Students will write practice mini-commentaries themselves and will be provided with detailed feedback on areas to develop. The importance of oral skills will be reviewed in relation to assessment requirements and students will have practical experience of delivering an individual oral presentation (IOP – 15% of the final grade for the program)

Above all, this is an opportunity for students to grow in confidence using the target language both written and oral, in a non-threatening environment, and explore the scope and sequence of the English A1 program.

How to Apply

Present Concordian students, students new to the school and students from other area schools are welcome to apply for the program (CIS students will receive priority seating).

Summer School will be three weeks in length beginning June 14, 2010 and ending July 2, 2010.

Snacks will be provided in the morning and in the afternoon, and we will serve a set lunch each day.  Students will have access to the library and computer facilities, as needed.  Class sizes will be 15-18 students or less and each classroom teacher will have a teaching assistant.
