student with childThe Diploma CAS program here at Concordian should challenge and hopefully excite your child by learning more about themselves and the community they live in. As we are more than our subjects and our careers, it’s our personal experiences which gives our life meaning and nurtures learning.

CAS stands for “Creativity”, “Action” and “Service”.  These are the three major components of experiential learning which enables our children to become healthy, creative, and compassionate human beings. Creativity is where imagination is used to solve problems or design solutions. Action teaches students the need to be physically fit and to teach sportsmanship in the face of competition.  Service shows students how truly lucky they are by helping those less fortunate.  DP CAS syllabus.

CAS allows students to create their own unique program so they can explore what ever interests them.  Activities chosen should not be mundane or meaningless to themselves or to the people they serve or interact with.  The activities should be rich enough to create meaningful goals and then to reflect upon them.  If CAS is done correctly, your child at times should feel discomfort as their new experiences often question their understanding of themselves and the world around them.

To this end Concordian’s CAS program strives to:

  • Promote mutual respect between participants in all our activities.
  • Allow opportunities for students to share common experiences and individual differences to promote cultural understanding.
  • Create meaningful, rich activities which will be sustainable over time.
  • Create opportunities for students to take ownership and leadership of activities; fostering commitment and perseverance.
  • Guide students to wisely choose activities rich enough to reflect upon and challenging enough to question basic beliefs.
  • Expose students to the greater community where appreciation can be fostered along with empathy, integrity and compassion.

Updates:  Student with kids

On alternating Thursdays our 11th and 12th grade classes end early to go out into the community to perform service work.  We have three Thursday service venues:  The Bangkok Refugee Center, the Non-Forma Learning Center serving the needs of the Bangna slum children and the Phrapradaeng Handicapped Foundation.  These activities will be on going throughout the year to help our students get the service time they need to complete their community service obligations.  On the weeks we do not have Thursday activities your DP child still needs to complete more service hours.  The IBO requirement clearly states that students must fulfill 3-4 hours a week fulfilling Creativity, Action and Service requirements.  Going every other week only provides half of the service time required.

Along with the alternating Thursdays, we hope your child will continue to volunteer to help our community after school on Fridays and on Saturday mornings.  Adding to our Duangjai Nursing Home and the Klongladdrabang school program started last year, new organizations have been added to this years Friday and Saturday programs.  We are honored to now serve Concordia Welfare Institute, the Tawaklongthong Schools in Thana City and regularly the Bangkok Refugee Center.

kids running We are excited starting this new school year doing Creativity, Action and Service.  The year 11 students have already shown their commitment and maturity by volunteering to participate in many after school activities like basketball, knitting, guitar and community service.  Hopefully this level of involvement will continue and infectiously catch on to the lower grades this year.

Please help us to remind your child to always fulfill their obligations by attending every event or game that they commit to.
